Man cannot diminish God's glory

A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell. C. S. Lewis

We must be hatched

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad. C. S. Lewis

Pride of a false knowledge

Don't be proud of a false knowledge that there is no God when you are not God.   Felix Dordaa Mahama

Raise funds of love

Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God - the rest will be given. Mother Teresa

Humility

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less. C. S. Lewis

The real problem

The real problem is not why some pious, humble, believing people suffer, but why some do not. C. S. Lewis

The beginning of good works

The confession of evil works is the first beginning of good works. Saint Augustine

Aim at heaven

Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither. C. S. Lewis

Take only what you need

Find out how much God has given you and from it take what you need; the remainder is needed by others. Saint Augustine

As we are, such are the times

If we live good lives, the times are also good. As we are, such are the times. Saint Augustine

Our heart is not quiet until it rests in…

Thou hast created us for Thyself, and our heart is not quiet until it rests in Thee. Saint Augustine

I feel angry when I see waste

There must be a reason why some people can afford to live well. They must have worked for it. I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things that we could use. Mother Teresa

Necessary to possible to impossible

Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. Francis of Assisi

Death, a blessings

Death may be the greatest of all human blessings. Socrates

Too honest to be a politician

I was really too honest a man to be a politician and live. Socrates

Seek to love, not to be loved

Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved as to love. Francis of Assisi

Make me an instrument of thy peace

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Francis of Assisi

Scatter there Thy cheerful beams

O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams. Saint Augustine

A drop in the ocean

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. Mother Teresa

Don't bother about originality

Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it. C. S. Lewis

Three days fasting and prayers -28th - 30th May, 2008
Teacher: Felix Dordaa Mahama
Text: Philippians 3:7-9

Background of St. Paul

St. Paul was a Pharisee. He was a scholar well respected. He had the right to be called a Jew and to be hailed by his own people and by other people.

Everyone loves uniqueness and the Israelites were unique; and St. Paul could choose to hold on to this uniqueness without caring about the rest of the world.

He could choose to stick to the old laws which probably were easier to follow; e.g. Jesus said because of the hardness of the hearts of the Israelites Moses allowed them to divorce. Jesus also said the Israelites believed in dishonouring their parents provided they could give to God whatever they would have used to honour their parents.

The sacrifice St. Paul made

St. Paul left all these more attractive things and chose a more difficult path of righteousness. He considered all these things that he could have enjoyed as a loss. In other words these things, as pleasing as they were did not have any attachment in his heart anymore. He left these things for the sake of the knowledge of Jesus Christ, which is eternal life.

What should we do ourselves?

It is this very knowledge of Christ that we seek, and in order to obtain this knowledge of Christ, we also need to, like St. Paul, reckon all the past things which used to give us joy, and which we might consider as profit, but which hide from as the knowledge of Christ, as loss.

This is a call to depart from past indulgences and engage in a new life. We should not fantasize about the past joys that we derived from indulging in negative activities. In fact, this is one of the reasons why we find it difficult to break away from past habits.
We need to break away from the past habits such as

  • Idolatry
  • Drunkenness
  • Drugs
  • Quarrels (home, school, work place)
  • Embezzlement
  • Selfishness (material, mental, spiritual)
  • Laziness
  • Living in illusion of past glories that prevent us from humbling ourselves and making a fresh start. We have to live in the reality of the present.
  • Fashion in the Church which either tempt or divert the attention of brethren

Consequences of fantasizing

For example, if you should begin to relive and fantasize about the times you indulged in fornication or adultery with your boyfriend or girlfriend, or the drinking sprees you used to go on, or the highs you used to go on drugs, or the pains you used to inflict on your neighbours during quarrels, all the chicken you ate with embezzled money, etc, you begin to desire to relive those days. You may even begin to regret ever leaving those ways. This sets your mind as a fertile ground for the devil and his agents to play on, influencing you towards the evil past. It would mean we consider these past things as a valuable part of our lives and so we give Satan the right to tempt us into doing them.
If we used to sacrifice to idols, we now know that it is wrong and doing so will deprive us of the knowledge of Christ and the new life it brings. Even though we used to get quick results from such practices, we have to forsake them. We should remember that the knowledge of Christ brings a new life which is filled with peace, security, hope and comfort. Even though the past may seem very pleasant, let us remember that we seek something much more valuable.

Respect dignities

When we despise dominion and speak evil of dignities we break the divine pattern and bring a tide of curse upon ourselves and those under our care. As those under our authority behold how we treat those in authority over us, they will become fuelled by the same spirit and start to treat us in a similar manner. Once this spirit enters into a community, that community will burst apart at some point fracturing along personality lines. This is the... Read more>>>

Auto-panic

It is as if most human beings are configured to be automatically  afraid whenever there are challenges. This auto-panic device makes even some Holy Spirit filled Christians to cry out, complain and wish for a return to their former ways of life when they go through a test.  In fact, when this auto-panic device is activated, it automatically uninstalls any faith application. Therefore, at this stage, anxiety, fear, worry, hopelessness, dejection etc. begin to control such a person. The people of... Read more>>>

A brief history of the Holy Rosary and h…

What is the rosary? The angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary, when he came to announce the conception of Jesus, is familiar to most Catholics. It is echoed in one of the most popular Catholic prayers, the Hail Mary (in Latin, Ave Maria): “Hail, [Mary,] favoured one [or ‘full of grace’]! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28). The words that follow in that prayer also come from Scripture, from Elizabeth’s greeting to our Lady soon afterward: “Blessed are you among women, and... Read more>>>
