TODAY'S REFLECTION - WEDNESDAY-11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
St. Silverius, Pope Martyr
2 Kings 2:1,6-14/Psalm 30:20-21,24/ Matthew 6:1-6,16-18
GOD SEES/KNOWS EVERYTHING
Beloved, in our today's first reading, the prophet Elisha succeeds the prophet Elijah, to continue to promote the worship of the One True God as against Baalism and also to carry out other prophetic roles. Elisha followed Elijah to the end and received a double portion of his spirit. Knowing that none of us shall live/rule/minister forever, it is important to learn to mentor people to suitably take over from us. We should not hang onto power as if without us nothing will work. If we get the opportunity to succeed somebody, we should also learn to continue with the good things that the person was doing and correct the lapses.
Friends, Jesus encourages us to remember that God sees or knows everything that we do and say. As such, we should not draw the attention of people to ourselves. The Christian life is not like "play acting on stage" or drawing fans to ourselves or receiving praises from others. For Jesus, our almsgiving, prayers/praying and fasting should not just be for public admiration. It does not really matter what others see in us or think about us. What matters is to strive to please God, who knows everything about us. Your heavenly Father who sees in secret will reward you (Matthew 6:4). What is my motive for giving alms? How and why do I pray? How and why do I fast?
Let us pray for people who are leading us now. We also pray for our fellow workers. We pray for those who will take over from us. Let us also be conscious of why and how we give alms, pray and fast. BE BLESSED.
